Todd Saunders

Born in Gander, Newfoundland, Todd Saunders has worked in many parts of the northern hemisphere, including Austria, Germany and Russia. Since 1996, however, he has been based in Norway. He established his practice, Saunders Architecture, in Bergen in 1998, and has gone on to complete works such as the Aurland Lookout (with Tommie Wilhelmsen, Aurland, 2006), Villa Storingavika (Bergen, 2004–07), Villa G (Hjellestad, Bergen, 2007–09); Sogn og Fjordane Summer Cabin (Rysjedalsvika, 2007–10) and Solberg Tower and Park (Sarpsborg, Østfold, 2010).

However, it is on Fogo Island, which sits off the coast of Newfoundland in an area of the Labrador Current known as Iceberg Alley, that Saunders really made his name. As part of a progamme to revitalise the island economy Saunders has realised four Fogo Island Studios (2010-11) as well as the Fogo Island Inn (2014). Saunders’ Fogo Island buildings were the subjects of the 2014 film  Strange & Familiar: Architecture on Fogo Island, which explored the ideas and aspirations behind the ambitious architectural venture, including the sentiment of creating “new things with old ways”.

Saunders is a guest professor at Cornell and also teaches at Bergen Architecture School, as well as at various other architecture and design schools throughout Scandinavia, Canada and England.
